Information about BComp(Hons) in SE degree program

Faculty of Computing (FoC) is the very first faculty among state universities, established (as the 11^th) faculty of the prestigious University, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) on December 22^nd,2022. This is the very first and only opportunity for SL youth to get to read for a Bachelor of Computing (Hons) degree in state universities. This article is focused on the Bachelor of Computing (Hons) in Software Engineering Degree program offered by the FoC. This four-year(Hons) degree program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the ever-evolving IT industry.

FoC commenced its academic activities in 2023 with the enrollment of the very first batch to follow BComp(Hons) in SE degree program in May 2023 followed with the second intake in April 2024.

To be eligible for this degree program, applicants must have obtained at least “S” passes in the G.C.E (A/L) in the subjects of Combined Mathematics, Physics, And also from Chemistry, Advanced Mathematics, Information and Communication Technology as the third subject. Students enrolled in this degree program can obtain a BComp(Hons) SE degree at the end of the four-year course.

BComp(Hons)in SE study program is designed to meet the increasing demand from both industrial and service sectors while focusing on developing graduates with a deep understanding of Software Engineering. This study program aims to produce well-rounded professionals who can meet international standards inclusive of SE competency Areas as per IEEE/ACM curricula recommendations (https://www.acm.org/binaries/content/assets/education/curricula-recommendations/cc2020.pdf) as well as Information Age Skill Set (https://sfia-online.org/en) For local and global workforce requirements from respective job markets.

Throughout the degree, you will cover various topics, including

computing essentials
mathematical and engineering fundamentals
professional practice
software modeling and analysis
requirements analysis and specification
software design
software verification & validation

You’ll also learn about emerging technologies. In addition to these technical skills, you’ll develop valuable abilities such as problem-solving, team collaboration, project management, and effective communication.

One of the unique aspects of this degree program is the opportunity for a six-month internship in the last semester. This practical experience allows you to apply what you’ve learned in real-world settings and gain insights into the professional IT environment while assuring you the opportunities to continue these industrial placements as your professional career.

In your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of interest, and you’ll complete a comprehensive research or design project. This flexibility ensures that you can tailor your education to your IT career goals as well as interests in SE discipline to further studies leading to postgraduate.

මෙම උපාධි වැඩසටහන සඳහා සුදුසුකම් ලැබීමට, අයදුම්කරුවන්අ.පො.ස (උ/පෙළ) සංයුක්ත ගණිතය, භෞතික විද්‍යාව යන විෂයයන්ට සහ තුන්වන විශය ලෙස රසායන විද්‍යාව, උසස් ගණිතය,තොරතුරු හා සන්නිවේදන තාක්ෂණය. සඳහා සාමාන්‍ය සාමාර්ථයක් (S) ලබා තිබිය යුතුය. මෙම උපාධි වැඩසටහනට ඇතුළත් වූ සිසුන්ට සිව් අවුරුදු පාඨමාලාව අවසානයේ BComp(Hons) Soft Eng උපාධියක් ලබා ගත හැක.
