Orientation Program 2026 Successfully Concludes at the Faculty of Computing, University of Sri Jayewardenepura

The Faculty of Computing at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura successfully conducted its Orientation Program 2026, welcoming the new undergraduate intake to the university community. Held from 26th March to 7th April 2026, the program concluded with an outbound training session on 23rd April 2026, offering students a comprehensive and enriching introduction to university life.

Designed to support students transitioning into higher education, the program introduced the Bachelor of Computing Honours degree pathways in Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Systems, while equipping students with essential academic, personal, and professional skills.

A Grand Inauguration

The program commenced with a formal inaugural ceremony at the Sri Sumangala Auditorium, marking the beginning of the students’ academic journey. The event featured addresses by key university figures, including Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, and Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The Registrar, Mr. A. B. Welivita, also addressed the gathering, highlighting important administrative aspects and student responsibilities.

An industry keynote by Ranil Rajapakse, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of IFS, provided valuable insights into current industry expectations and emerging opportunities in the IT sector. The ceremony concluded with a video presentation on the Faculty of Computing, followed by the national anthem.

In the afternoon, students engaged in a guided library registration and visit, gaining their first exposure to the university’s academic resources.

Academic and Personal Development

The program featured a dynamic range of sessions designed to build academic confidence and support personal growth.

A session on the history and evolution of the university, delivered by Medagampitiye Wijithadhamma Thero, provided students with a deeper appreciation of the institution’s rich heritage.

Students were further guided on shaping their future through an insightful session by Prof. (Dr.) Aruna Gamage, while Mr. Peter D’Almeida encouraged self-reflection and personal development through an engaging interactive session.

The importance of English proficiency in higher education was highlighted by Dr. Madhubhashini Disanayake Rathnayake, complemented by a series of English language sessions conducted throughout the program to strengthen communication, academic writing, and presentation skills.

Student Well-being and University Support

Recognizing the importance of student well-being, the program included several sessions focused on health, mindfulness, and support services.

Dr. Sanath Mahawithanage introduced practical mindfulness techniques to help students manage stress and maintain mental well-being, while Dr. Sagarie De Silva provided an overview of medical services available at the university.

Students were also introduced to essential academic and support systems, including the Learning Management System (LMS) by Dr. Ravimal Bandara and student welfare services by Prof. K. M. Alexander. A personal counselling session conducted by Mr. A. A. Sachin Dilruwan Wickramasinghe further emphasized the importance of mental health and seeking support when needed.

Building Responsible and Informed Citizens

A key highlight of the program focused on developing responsible and disciplined individuals.

The session commenced with an address by Nilantha Jayasuriya, Chief Marshal and Acting Chief Security Officer, who emphasized discipline, responsibility, and the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful university environment.

This was followed by Nihal Chandrathilake, Senior Lecturer of the Legal Studies Unit, who provided valuable insights into legal awareness, civic duties, and ethical conduct expected from university students.

Students were also introduced to student communities such as ASC and IEEE, encouraging active participation in academic and professional development activities.

Industry Exposure and Professional Development

Bridging academic learning with real-world experience, the program featured several distinguished guest speakers from industry.

Sanjaya Karunasena, Executive Director of GovTech Sri Lanka, shared perspectives on digital transformation and emerging opportunities within the public sector.

In addition, Naushard Cader, Chartered Accountant, provided valuable professional insights, motivating students to align their academic journey with future career aspirations.

Students also benefited from a practical session on managing challenges in university life, delivered by Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Manoj Samarasekara, who emphasized resilience, discipline, and effective decision-making.

Academic Orientation and Career Development

Students were formally introduced to the academic structure of the Faculty of Computing through a session conducted by the Heads of Departments, who outlined degree pathways and expectations. The session also included an introduction to academic staff, fostering early engagement between students and lecturers.

Effective learning strategies were discussed by Mr. P. Dias, Senior Lecturer, while career development was addressed through a session led by Ms. Chathurangani Thennakoon, Senior Career Advisor at the Career Guidance Unit (CGU).

The Career Guidance session was further enriched by the involvement of CGU student clubs, including the Career Skills Development Society (CSDS), Startup Hub, Gavel Club, Flair Club, Adventure Club, Values of the Wise (VoW) Society, and the J’pura National Rower Crew. These platforms provide students with valuable opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and entrepreneurial skills beyond the classroom.

Celebrating Creativity and Community

Beyond academics, the orientation program fostered creativity, confidence, and a sense of community among students.

The English concert provided a vibrant platform for students to showcase their talents and enhance their confidence in communication and performance.

The music event, conducted by Praneeth Abhayasundere, retired Professor, brought together elements of art and culture. The event was further enriched by Sisira Kumara Mahagama, Cultural Promotion Officer at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and hosted by Kanishka Wijayarathne. It created a lively and engaging atmosphere, encouraging artistic expression and collaboration.

Outbound Training: A Strong Finish

The orientation program concluded with an outbound training session held on 23rd April 2026. Through team-building activities and outdoor challenges, students developed essential qualities such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience, bringing the orientation journey to a meaningful close.

Overall, the Orientation Program 2026 successfully provided a well-rounded introduction to university life at the Faculty of Computing. By integrating academic guidance, personal development, industry exposure, and creative engagement, the program laid a strong foundation for the success of the new undergraduate cohort.
